How to Remove a Google Review (And What to Do When You Cannot)

12 September 20262 min read

Google does not remove reviews for being unfair. It removes reviews that breach its policies. If you can show a breach, removal is realistic. If you cannot, the answer is dilution and response, not another report.

Grounds Google accepts

  • Fake or spam — reviewer was never a customer, or the same account reviews unrelated businesses in bulk.
  • Conflict of interest — a competitor, former employee or the business itself.
  • Off-topic — a complaint about a different company, branch or a political rant.
  • Harassment, hate speech or profanity.
  • Personal information — names of staff, medical details, addresses.
  • Impersonation.

The report process, step by step

  1. Open the review in your Business Profile, choose Report review and pick the closest policy breach.
  2. Wait three to five working days for the automated decision.
  3. If rejected, escalate through Business Profile support and request a human review, quoting the specific policy clause.
  4. If escalation fails, keep a dated record. It matters if the matter becomes legal.

When the reviewer is identifiable and the claim is false

A false factual statement that damages your business may be defamatory. A solicitor's letter to the reviewer frequently results in voluntary deletion, which is faster than fighting the platform. For regulated professions, take advice before contacting a reviewer directly.

When the review is simply negative

Reply once, publicly, briefly. Acknowledge, state what you have changed, offer to continue offline. Never argue and never reveal customer details. Then out-collect it: a steady flow of genuine reviews moves your rating faster than any single removal. See online reputation repair.

What not to do

Do not buy reviews, do not incentivise them, and do not ask staff to post. Google detects the pattern and can strip your whole review history or suspend the profile — a far worse outcome than one bad review.

Frequently asked questions

How long does removal take?

Days for a clear policy breach, two to four weeks if escalation is needed.

Can the reviewer see that I reported them?

No, reports are not disclosed to reviewers.

We have dozens of suspicious reviews. Is that different?

Yes. Coordinated attacks need evidence packaged as a pattern rather than individual reports. That is work we do — get in touch .
